{Croatia} Plitvice National Park, a One of a Kind Must Visit Destination

Remember the days before shared links on Facebook? We used to get those forwarded emails from family, friends and even strangers – that was the extent of “going viral” at that time. Among the forwarded content, was one email that chronicled a “magical” place with a mesmerizing picture of a beautiful lake.

Where is that place?!

Unfortunately, the email we received identified the location of the park to be somewhere in South East Asia. It took a bit of searching but in the end, we were able to identify it as Plitvice National Park in Croatia.

We finally made it there!

Fast forward “many” years… we finally made it there (special thanks to newlyweds Jelena & Danijel who drove us to the park and back despite only have just married a couple days before!)

It really is that stunning!

We were driven there by our good friends Jelena & Danijel. However, it is also easy to get there by bus if you stay in Zagreb or Split. There are plenty of tours/round trip arrangements to get you there and back.

We must warn you though, there is a photo op at every corner. It will probably also drive you nuts trying to capture the colors and beauty of the park through your cameras and being unable to truly capture it!

Entrance to the park

Did you know that Plitvice National Park is a series of 16 lakes arranged in cascades connected through miles and miles of walkway!

The lakes take on a blue green hue. Absolutely mesmerizing!

Every corner is a photo op! With millions of tourists that come through this park, it may take a while to get a photo free of other people!

A big thank you to our friends who patiently waited for us while we took shot after shot of this breathtaking place!

It drove us crazy to not be able to truly capture the beauty of the place through our cameras.

Water is so clear you can see right through it!

Crystal clear water!

It’s tempting to jump into the lake and swim in it!

Baby friendly?

There are miles and miles of walkway connecting the different areas of the park. So be prepared that this place is not stroller friendly. Liam was 7 months old when we visited the park. We carried him in a baby carrier throughout the visit. Worked wonderfully for us.

We recommend baby carriers over strollers.

Our parents taking a break from the walk.

Not stroller friendly.

There’s food in the park. You can also bring your own food and eat at the tables there.

The gang at the park – Thank you friends for the company at the park!

USEFUL TIPS:

  1. There is food at the entrance to the park. Options are limited. There is also food for purchase inside the park (about halfway through the route, near the boat dock). Options are also limited and prices a bit high.
  2. The park is about 2+ hours drive from Zagreb.
  3. There are buses that can take you there and back. We heard Croatia Bus is one such company.
  4. Try to go as early as you can. Less people, more time if you plan the trip as a day trip.
  5. Depending on the weather, be prepared to layer clothing and bring a backpack of some sort for when you decide to add or remove layers.
  6. Bring cash.
  7. Wear comfortable shoes. I saw a lady wear high heels. Didn’t look like she was enjoying the walk.

We hope you enjoyed the posts and the photos of this stunning national park!
