{USA} Not To Be Missed in Waikiki: Marukame Udon

After you’ve had a delicious breakfast at Iyasume Musubi in Waikiki per our recommendation, what do you do for lunch?

If you pass by Marukame Udon on Kuhio Avenue in Waikiki, you’d see a long line of people.

In September 2012, we decided we’d get there early and wait in line. If there’s a long queue, it MUST be good! This principle of ours has guided us well on our travels around the world. Anywhere where there’s a long line, we’re usually not disappointed with the food!

I’m not kidding about the long line! We got there at 10:30am for their 11:00am opening and this was the length of the line! But the good news is, the line moves rather quickly!

Marukame Udon – worth the wait!

To our delight, the line actually moves rather quickly when the doors open (yes, we were all standing in line before they even opened). Here are our takeaways from this visit to Marukame Udon:

The restaurant is a casual cafeteria style restaurant. You get in line, grab a tray, order your noodle, pick your tempura and side dishes, then pay.

Casual, cafeteria style restaurant. The food here beats any cafeteria food I’ve had 🙂

Station 1 – order your noodles.

The udon is freshly made on site! You can see the man rolling the dough at the entrance of the restaurant!

Udon – Freshly made on site!

The broth wasn’t out-of-the-world delicious (it was still flavorful!) but for the price and the freshness of the udon, I’d go back again next time I’m in Oahu!
The assortment of tempura and side dishes were delicious – my favorite was the squid tempura!

Tempura choices. The squid was my favorite.

Musubi side dishes. They were not as good as the ones at Iyasume Musubi, of course.

Very reasonable price! (Most <$5! for the udon)

Reasonably priced!

We personally enjoyed the hot udon more than the cold udon. This was delicious. Simple yet flavorful!

I can’t wait to go back! Makes me hungry just looking at this picture 🙂

Needless to say, we were not disappointed. We enjoyed our casual dining experience at Marukame Udon and plan to go back again next time we’re in Waikiki!
