Passport with Purpose: Help Fund Five Wells in Haiti and Win Two Smartphones!

“The lack of access to clean water and sanitation kills children at a rate equivalent of a jumbo jet crashing every four hours!”

Your alarm rings. You turn it off and drag yourself off your bed and into the bathroom. With half opened eyes, you turn the tap and water starts flowing. You touch the water… ooh, too cold. You let it run for a little while longer. Ahh… it’s warm now.

You then proceed to brush your teeth and wash your face. You use the toilet and then flush. You take a shower and then proceed to the kitchen where again, free flowing water is available at the turn of a faucet.

Most of us take this amenity for granted. We pretty much expect clean water to be readily available to us at all times.

Can you imagine what it’d be like without this luxury780 million people lack access to an improved water source; that’s approximately one in nine people!

Passports with Purpose

We love being a part of the giving back initiatives hosted by Passports with Purpose (PwP).

If you have been following us, you’d know that last year, we helped spread the word about their fundraiser to raise $80,000 to help the construction of two libraries in Zambia in partnership with Room to Read.

This year, travel bloggers worldwide and PwP, in partnership with Water.org, have an ambitious goal to raise $100,000 to fund the construction of five wells for two communities in earthquake ravaged Haiti.

Read on for how you can help!

Five Wells Provide Clean Water for Two Communities

This year, we’re joining over 150 other bloggers who have all secured fantastic prizes. Blog readers (that’s you) have the opportunity donate and for every $10 donated, get a chance to be entered into a drawing for the prize of your choice!

100% of the proceeds will go to Water.org. Water.org will use the funds for the construction of five wells for two communities (Boucan Carre and Mirebalais) in Haiti as well as train the local community to maintain their own wells and provide additional education around water and sanitation.

Each year, 3.4 million people die from a water related disease. That’s almost the entire population of Los Angeles! Construction of these five wells is a small but important step towards reducing this number and making the lives of the two communities better. You can help.

What’s better than one Windows Phone? TWO Windows Phones!

Our prize sponsor this year is the Microsoft Windows Phone Entertainment Team! In support of this year’s initiative, they have donated not one but two AT&T Windows Phones 7 (upgradable to Windows Phone 7.5) —  HTC Titan  and HTC Titan II (Restrictions: AT&T carrier).

The HTC Titan is an awesome Windows Phone, sporting a 4.7 inch display! Couple this with a 1.5GHz processor and an 8 megapixel camera and the latest 7.5 software and you’ve got yourself a sweet smartphone! The HTC Titan II takes it up a notch with 4G LTE, the same whopping 4.7 inch display and 16 megapixel camera among the many cool features of the phone!

I personally love how the live tiles brings everything you need to the surface at a glance!

Another favorite feature of mine is the local search results. Looking for a restaurant? Tap the search hardware button, type in your culinary search query (e.g. “italian restaurant”) and you’ll see a list of restaurants in your area listed under “local”. Tap on any of the options and you get a list of one-touch options such as address (shows you the restaurant in a map), indoor map (shows you indoor map if available), directions (launches turn-by-turn to the restaurant from your current location), phone number (calls the restaurant), reservations (loads Opentable app for reservations) etc… I can go on and on and on but I’ll leave you room for some delightful surprises!

The winner will get not just one but both these phones! One for yourself and another for whomever you’d like to gift it to or keep both for yourself!

Don’t fancy smartphones? No worries, there are many other great prizes for you to choose from on the donation page.

I’m Sold. How Do I Participate?

Simple. Follow the steps below between November 28, 2012 to December 11, 2012. All proceeds go to Water.org.

Step 1: Head on over to the Donation Page.

Step 2: Select the HTC Titan and HTC Titan II prize (and/or whichever other prizes that you prefer) and make your tax deductible donation via Paypal for a chance to win. For every $10 you donate, you get a chance in the drawing of the prize of your choice.
